GUIPROGAL highlights the importance of pea cultivation to help solve the global problems of climate change and nutritional security (OE4 PAC). Local pea landraces are widely accepted by farmers as presenting a rich quality profile and being well adapted to suboptimal growth. However, despite these recognized benefits, they have been abandoned in the main production systems.
GUIPROGAL aims to recover and validate the agronomic and technological potential of traditional landraces through their evaluation in controlled climates, allowing a safe selection of well-adapted regional cultivars evaluated in different sites (PT1) (OE5, 6). At the same time, the quality profile and its transformation potential will be improved, developing new formulations rich in protein for human food and cattle (PT2) (OE1, 9), as well as their transfer to the sector (PT3) (OE2, 3). The validation of the results will be achieved through the participation of interested parties, which will ensure the transfer of knowledge to choose which varieties to grow and will accelerate the dissemination of seeds suitable for the needs of farmers in specific areas of Galicia (OE7, 8).
GUIPROGAL brings together a balanced and diverse consortium that includes breeders, agronomists, food technology experts (MBG and CTC), field technicians, farmers and producers (AXIÑA, GAMALLO, Javier Sabín) and dissemination and transfer experts (FEUGA). GUIPROGAL affects the entire value chain, production, transformation and transfer, incorporating technological solutions (varieties and products), revaluing native biodiversity through the diversification of foods rich in protein and innovative measures of pea cultivation systems that contribute to sustainability (ODS12, 15).
This project is financed by aid for the implementation of innovative projects of the operational groups of the European Innovation Association (EIA), co-financed with the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) within the framework of the Strategic Plan for agricultural policy common (PEPAC) 2023-2027. The Department of the Rural Environment is the body of the Galician Administration that is responsible for proposing and executing general guidelines in the rural area and encompasses powers in agriculture, livestock, rural development and regional planning, rural structures, agri-food and forestry industries, forests, prevention and defense of forest fires. Budget: €139,556.94 (100% subsidized).
